My experience with Albright IP has been flawless from start to finish. I... have never filed a patent before so I was learning everything as I went along. They have been helpful in every way possible and gone the extra mile to ensure I was kept in the loop and happy as everything was going through each step of the way. I cannot express enough how pleased I am with their service. I had the pleasure of working with Will, Abigail, and Adrian. I would recommend Albright IP to anyone looking to file a patent application.read more

Was a pleasure to work with Will and Melissa on a patent draft and filing.... Will took the time to understand both my software product and the commercial motivations behind the patent filing. They were extremely responsive to questions and clarifications throughout the process (availability isn't everything, but it certainly helps!).They were also very clear regarding fees, and set out a very helpful visual timeline and cost breakdown on the whole patent application process at the pre-sales stage. This emphasis on making sure I understood all aspects of the work, and having documentation to help with that, is something I didn't see with any of the other patent services I was talking to at the time. This clear communication continued throughout our interactions.Would recommend Albright IP to anyone looking to patent an invention. The patent they filed for me was for a software invention.read more

Helpful Tips

Do I have to identify the designer?
It is possible to waive the name of the designer when filing a European Community Design, but you should be sure that you have the rights to the design

PROTOTYPING

Our sister company Duku Design can advise on all aspects of product design. In particular, Duku Design can produce prototypes to prove the feasibility of your idea, and to present to potential buyers.

Prototypes are an essential stage in developing an idea so that it is ready for presentation to industry or manufacture. However, prototyping can be expensive and so it may well be prudent to establish interest in your idea before embarking on the prototyping process.

In the majority of cases, the completion of design work will be necessary before a prototype can be produced. This design work, which forms part of the ‘Concept Development’ step of the product development process will result in a 3D computer aided design (CAD) model that can be used to check the basic form and function.

Having developed a CAD model, it will then be possible to build a prototype using a variety of techniques depending on the actual requirements of the project, and in line with your budget.

Prototypes come in a variety of forms, including:

‘Visual’ prototype – This type of prototype conveys the overall shape and size of the product but does not usually prove the function of the idea.

‘Proof of concept’ prototype – This type of prototype demonstrates the main functionality of the idea, however as ‘off the shelf’ components are used, this type of prototype is unlikely to look like the final product.

‘Presentation’ prototype – This type of prototype combines the functionality of the product with the overall appearance. Often using bespoke parts, it is likely that production grade materials will be used and the prototype will resemble the final product much better.

‘Pre-production’ prototype – This type of prototype builds on the work of a presentation prototype by fully considering mass production manufacturing methods and production. The parts are likely to be created using production methods and materials suited to the actual application and use of the product.

The product designers at Duku Design have a vast range of previous prototyping experience, including handheld electronic products and textile products.

Prototypes can be used to convey to investors, buyers or potential licensees that an idea is significantly developed and nearly ready to manufacture. However, further refinement is often required before going into production. Our team have experience in this pre-production stage, and by working with excellent manufacturing partners, who are carefully selected for their expertise and reputation, can guide you through this stage if required.
